Knowing the game being cut short due to rain was an ever-present possibility, both sides understood having the lead by the end of the fifth inning was crucial. The call never came, but James Paxton and the Red Sox pitching staff saw to it the Kansas City Royals never had a chance anyway.Coming off a rough outing last weekend against Toronto, Paxton bounced back with 5.1 shutout innings to help lead the Red Sox past Kansas City 2-0. The left-hander scattered six hits over the six innings he appeared in, but otherwise shut the Royals down and struck out six to earn the win.Not only did the victory give Boston a 3-1 series win over the Royals, but coupled with Toronto’s loss earlier in the day, the Red Sox were able to regain some ground on their divisional rivals and now trail the Blue Jays by four games for the last American League Wild Card spot.Playing amid a steady rain that started falling just before first pitch, neither offense was able to get anything going through the fi...

Orioles hold on to beat Astros, 5-4, avoid sweep behind Adley Rutschman’s leadoff homer and stellar defense

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:29:45 GMT

The opening batter in each half of the first inning featured impressive feats from Orioles players. To lead off the game, third baseman Ramón Urías made a diving play at third base to steal an extra-base hit from Houston Astros leadoff hitter José Altuve — the first of several superb plays by starting pitcher Dean Kremer’s defense. To begin the bottom half, Adley Rutschman hit a leadoff home run that narrowly cleared Camden Yards’ rarely conquered left field wall to become just the second left-handed batter to do so since the strange dimensions were put in place last year.Coming off back-to-back ugly losses, the good start on defense and offense put the Orioles on the right path to beat the defending World Series champion Astros, 5-4, and avoid a sweep for the 76th straight series. The bullpen continued to show cracks, allowing a run in both the eighth and ninth as the Astros cut a three-run lead to one, but closer Félix Bautista got Jon Singleto...

Zappe completed 10-of-12 passes for 67 yards and was sacked twice behind an offensive line that struggled to give its quarterbacks time to look downfield in the Patriots’ 20-9 loss.Related ArticlesNew England Patriots | Patriots-Texans Inactives: Nine players not spotted in pregame warmups New England Patriots | Patriots assign rookie numbers before preseason opener vs. Texans New England Patriots | The Patriots’ 4 big questions heading into the preseason New England Patriots | Five things to watch in preseason o...
