A West Hollywood bar and restaurant with close connections to Maui is holding a fundraiser later this week to help employees at its sister location in Lahaina who lost everything, including their jobs, in the devastating wildfires. Matt Robb, co-owner of the Dirty Monkey in Lahaina and the Naughty Pig in West Hollywood, lives on Maui. He told KTLA that while he was fortunate enough that his home survived the fast-moving fires, many of his employees barely escaped the flames with their lives. “There’s no amount of help that’s too much right now,” Robb said.  As of Sunday afternoon, the death toll from the fires has risen to 93 with officials estimating that some 4,500 people are in need of shelter. Officials in Hawaii added that nearly 2,200 structures in West Maui were destroyed, including the entire town of Lahaina.  “There is not a building standing. It is a war zone. It looks like we’ve been napalmed,” Robb explained." The people that are with me lost everything out of ...

DENVER (KDVR) -- A Colorado woman is set to be recognized for a world record after she rowed, with a teammate, across the Pacific Ocean from California to Hawaii.Jayme Linker of Brush, Colorado, trained six to eight hours a day to prepare for her trek across half of the Pacific Ocean. The rowing took just over 45 days, and it's not her first trip across an ocean. It was all to raise awareness about a very serious medical condition."The only thing that propels these ocean rowing boats are us, the motors," Linker said. She had crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a row boat before, from Spain to the Caribbean. That trip qualified her to take on a longer trek."While someone's on the oars, the other person's resting, sleeping, eating, whatever," Linker said.Records and amazing physical feats aside, Jayme shared her experience on the water."Every time I'm on the oars, I'm putting every single ounce of effort I've got into it. So it is like a two-hour sprint, every single time," Linker said. That s...

Teen vaping: Did the EU get it wrong on e-cigarettes?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:40:46 GMT

When the head of a tobacco company is calling for stricter regulation on its e-cigarettes, you know there must be something wrong. In recent years, across Europe, teen vaping has exploded. The number of 11-17 year olds who have ever used an e-cigarette has quadrupled in the U.K. since 2013; more than half of 17-year-olds in France have tried a vape; and the percentage of 11-17 year olds who have used an e-cigarette in the past month has doubled in Italy since 2014 and increased significantly in Latvia and Romania. While there’s broad, if not universal, agreement that e-cigarettes can help adult smokers quit, governments, doctors, public health experts and the public are now sounding the alarm on the increase in young people using these products. Even industry is calling for stricter rules. James Murphy, director of research and science at British American Tobacco (BAT), told POLITICO the company was open to options to make e-cigarettes less appealing and accessible for young pe...
