Ask Amy: Father’s “technical” marriage raises questions

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:15:36 GMT

Dear Amy: I recently reached out to my estranged father to inquire about any life changes he may have had recently, because I was going through the federal security clearance process. When asked if he was still married, his response was, “Theoretically yes, but I haven’t had contact with her for over six years and have no intention of renewing contact.”Knowing my father, I am unsurprised that he is currently married to someone that he has no contact with and is unwilling to divorce. However, I am mad at him for once again treating marriage as a trivial affair he can walk away from with no consequences. I pity his partner and sometimes wonder if I should convince her to divorce him and take her fair share. While I understand that this is between him and his “technical wife” (using his terms), I feel like this is a matter that does involve me from a legal perspective.I do not want to fight a legal battle regarding powers of attorney or probates 20 years down the line. Achieving Holistic Sustainability Through Food Systems

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:15:36 GMT

If there is one thing that recent years have made evident, from COVID-19 to climate change, it is that people and the environment are interconnected and constantly impacting one another. - writes Azis Armand. There are many ways that we can choose to restore the health of our planet, and although phasing out fossil fuels should undoubtedly be a principal mechanism, it is only one of the many strategies that must be employed. Another vital and direct impact we can have in strengthening our ecosystem is through resilient and sustainable food systems.Food systems are both a major cause of climate change—accounting for a third of all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions— and extremely fragile in the face of natural disasters. Therefore, climate mitigation and decarbonization strategies in this sector will be critical to reaching the Paris Agreement’s overarching goal of limiting temperature increases to ‘well below 2 degrees Celsius’. As a country particularly vulnerable to climate change...

On this first day of 2024, many people have a long list of New Year’s resolutions to achieve. But some of those goals are stalled from Day One, according to one CEO and author. That’s because most people focus on a lofty goal instead of their progress, according to Gerald J. Leonard, a successful CEO and author of ‘A Symphony of Choices: How Mentorship Taught a Manager Decision-Making, Project Management, and Workplace Engagement – and Saved a Concert Season.’“Our brains are naturally designed to focus on the negative,” he told WTOP. “You’re looking for all of the things that can go wrong around you.”That includes resolutions that haven’t worked out in the past, according to Leonard, who offered a couple of dos, and one major don’t to successfully achieve goals in 2024.Don’t go for large, lofty resolutions, Leonard said. The Air Force said its nuclear missile capsules were safe. But toxic dangers lurked, documents show

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:15:36 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — A large pool of dark liquid festering on the floor. No fresh air. Computer displays that would overheat and ooze out a fishy-smelling gel that nauseated the crew. Asbestos readings 50 times higher than the Environmental Protection Agency’s safety standards. These are just some of the past toxic risks that were in the underground capsules and silos where Air Force nuclear missile crews have worked since the 1960s. Now many of those service members have cancer. The toxic dangers were recorded in hundreds of pages of documents dating back to the 1980s that were obtained by The Associated Press through Freedom of Information Act requests. They tell a far different story from what Air Force leadership told the nuclear missile community decades ago, when the first reports of cancer among service members began to surface: “The workplace is free of health hazards,” a Dec. 30, 2001, Air Force investigation found.“Sometimes, illnesses tend to occur by chance alone,” a follow...

(CNN) — On Sunday, the US Food and Drug Administration warned consumers of possible bacterial contamination of Reckitt/Mead Johnson’s Nutramigen Hypoallergenic Powdered Infant Formula Products. The specialty formula is a hypoallergenic infant formula used by infants allergic to cow’s milk. The manufacturers voluntarily recalled 675,030 cans of the formula on December 29 after the FDA was notified that exported formula tested positive for Cronobacter sakazakii by the Israeli Ministry of Health. The Cronobacter bacteria can cause rare but potentially deadly infections in newborns. It’s present in the environment but is also known to contaminate powdered infant formula. The recalled cans of formula had been distributed in the US and additional product exported. The agency notes that no illnesses have been reported to date and that most of the product distributed in the US has likely already been consumed.“All product in question went through extensive testing,” the company ...

Paul Dzavik, solid defense lifts Hingham past Marshfield

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:15:36 GMT

KINGSTON – It’s been a brutally difficult slate so far for the Hingham boys hockey team, but another strong showing on New Year’s Eve day has its heads held high entering 2024.Behind two goals from Paul Dzavik and their typically stout defensive game, the No. 5 Harbormen (3-3-1) scrapped out a 3-1 win over No. 6 Marshfield in their second annual Hockey Fights Cancer matchup.Dzavik’s second goal gave Hingham the lead with a minute left in the second period after the defense’s only blemish allowed the Rams (4-2) to tie it, and the entire group did a stellar job disrupting Marshfield opportunities to allow just 14 shots on goalie Mike Karo.To end 2023 with such a win, along with losing all three of its games by one goal, has morale high in the Hingham locker room.“It’s great, I tell them not to worry about the record,” said Harbormen head coach Tony Messina, who expects injured top scorer Travis Rugg to make his debut soon. “We’re getting better every time. We’re trending in the right ...

Lucas: From a smuggler’s den to diplomatic calling

Uran Ferizi is my kind of illegal immigrant.Twenty-seven years after the penniless 15-year-old boy from Albania snuck into the United Kingdom clinging to the undercarriage of a truck ferried over the English Channel, Ferizi is now set to meet with King Charles.Ferizi, 42, is Albania’s new ambassador to the U.K.And he is now also rubbing shoulders with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and foreign Minister David Cameron. How he got there from where he came from is the stuff that dreams are made of.Ferizi grew up in Albania at a time when his parents lost most of their savings—as hundreds of thousands of Albanians did—when unregulated Ponzi schemes swept the country in 1997.People who lost money rioted against the government and toppled it. Armories were raided and some 2,000 people were killed before the UN authorized a 7,000-member armed force to enter the country and restore order.A year later Ferizi was in Belgium planning to sneak into the U.K. as thousands of other young Albania...
